Rodys R is an aqueous solution of sodium salt of naphthalene sulfonic acid formaldehyde (NSF) polycondensates with a dry substance content of 40%, and a low content of calcium and iron ions. The production technology of Rodys R allows obtaining a product that neither has an environmental classification, nor does it contribute to increase of the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in finished products. As a dispersant, it is especially dedicated to emulsion polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and can be an alternative to Rodys K.

Rodys R is a surfactant in which the hydrophobic group is an organic chain, and the sulfone groups form a hydrophilic part. This structure implies its dispersing properties. Polycondensate, adsorbing onto solid particles, forms a layer on them of unipolar electrical charges. Their mutual repulsion causes both the disintegration of agglomerates of these particles, and even dispersion in the water continuous phase of the system.Rodys R was designed for the needs of the rubber industry, and its main application is in the emulsion polymerization process of styrene and butadiene leading to the production of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The chemical structure and physicochemical parameters of this polymer favour the formation of colloidal systems in the liquid phase, creating time-stable dispersion. The product is compatible with other additives used in the process.Rodys R used in a small amount causes a very good dispersion of latex particles formed in the production process in the aqueous phase. This prevents the formation of its coagulates during both polymerization and degasification. Rodys R also does not adversely affect the physicochemical (e.g. Mooney viscosity, polydispersity, vitrification temperature) and mechanical (tensile strength, elongation at break) properties of the obtained styrene-butadiene rubber, or the speed of the polymerization reaction.The main application of Rodys R is emulsion polymerization of styrene with butadiene. Still, it can also be used in emulsion polymerization processes of other types of rubbers, as well as various types of aqueous suspensions.
