Rotanina W is an auxiliary agent used in the tanning industry. It is a substitute synthetic tannin used mainly in the dressing of vegetable tanned leather to increase its softness and elasticity. The product is a sulphonated phenolic resin of anionic character. It is in the form of a homogeneous, viscous brown liquid with a cherry red shade. It is characterized by high water solubility and miscibility with vegetable and synthetic tannin solutions in any ratio.

This synthetic, anionic substitute tannin, when used on its own, provides leather with softness, bulkiness, fullness and gives it a light pink colour. The characteristic features of Rotanina W are its fast penetration and its high bonding capacity, which are similar to the properties of the vegetable tanning agents. Its use in vegetable tanning processes facilitates and significantly accelerates the tanning of the leather.Rotanina W has dispersing properties in the presence of vegetable tanning agents that are difficult to dissolve. In the vegetable tanning process, it provides softness, fullness and elasticity of leather. Moreover, it has a clarifying effect on tanning liquor of plant origin and prevents the formation of sediments in them. It gently acidifies and facilitates obtaining proper acidity of tanning liquor, with simultaneous anti-mould effect.The product is used for vegetable tanning of light and medium weight leather, in particular: haberdashery, lining, outer garment, light and heavy cattle hide and sole leather. Favourable effects are also obtained using Rotanina W in combination with stiffening syntans for tanning heavy type sole leather. It is also used for retanning chrome tanned leather for light filling, better absorbency and bright, even colour.
